The inauguration ceremony of the new Civic Museum of Belluno has been scheduled for Thursday January 26th, at 5:30pm, at the Teatro Comunale of Belluno. At the end of the event it will be possible to visit the museum at its new home in Palazzo Fulcis with entrance until 10:00pm.
In addition, until February 5th, entrance to the new Civic Museum of Belluno is free of charge.

Exceptional guest Tiziano Vecellio with his Madonna Barbarigo, on exhibit until May 1st.

Adorable Belluno helps you get to know your neighbor Palazzo Fulcis, a place at the heart of the citizen center, facing via Roma, in front of the historic Teatro Comunale. The 18th century palace, the former home of one of the most known families of the city, now belongs to all of the Bellunese and is destined to become the cultural jewel of the Dolomites.

Palazzo Fulcis the home of art in Belluno

Palazzo Fulcis yesterday

Palazzo Fulcis gets its name from the nobile Bellunese family Fulcis, said to be residents of Belluno as early as the 1300s and inscribes in the Council of Nobles since 1512.
Few know the history of the palace in the centuries before the 1700s, certainly that in 1776 the architect Valentino Alpago Novello (1707-1793) was responsible for the expansion of the palace on the occasion of the marriage of Guglielmo Fulcis to the Trentino countess Francesca Migazzi de Vaal.
Palazzo Fulcis was enriched with the elegante and powerful facade on via Roma, the creation of two monumental entrances and an imposing perron. The residence is given not just a grandiose honor room, but also the interiors gain precious finishes with stucco decorations and extraordinary sown floors, with rococo motifs.

Palazzo Fulcis today

Today Palazzo Fulcis maintains its unaltered charm that has distinguished it for centuries. It consists of 3000 square meters of exhibit space, distributed on 5 floors in 24 exhibition rooms. The restoration work, financed by the Fondazione Cariverona, was entrusted to the studio Arteco of Verona and involved close collaboration between the museum curator Denis Ton and the design architect Antonella Milani.
But let’s go to the palace, what has changed from its antique perspective? Little to nothing, since the work of restoration did not only maintain as much as possible the original style of this splendid citizen residence, but also gave life back to historic details. Today standing out more beautifully than ever, the delicate decorations of the royal floor and the frescoes that enrich the ceiling of the Grand Salon of the second half of the 1700s and the frescoes of the end of the 1800s, that animate other spaces of the palace. In the restoration of the Fulcis

During the restoration of the Fulcis, floors with rococo motifs and late baroque stuccos were also recovered.

What is new? There are new security systems and air conditioning, a new main staircase and an elevator, all transparent for access to each floor. Additional maintenance for the functional adaption of the new Civic Museum of Belluno.

Works and artists of the Civic Museum of Belluno

As you have been able to understand Palazzo Fulcis is already a masterpiece of art in itself and to succeed at inserting the entire collection of the Civic Museum of Belluno, which consists of well over 600 pieces, in spaces this strongly stylized, was not a simple endeavor. The same structure of the palace constrains a path through the museum that is not at all linear, yet remains very evocative, that we are certain.

What are the artworks that one can admire in the rooms of the Fulcis?

The Civic Museum of Belluno conserves splendid collections, beginning with the Zambelli collection: one of the most important collections of 18th century porcelain of Veneto. The jewelry collection of Prosdocimi Bozzoli, the bronzes and the plaques of Count Florio Miari, donated to the museum by his son Carlo, the woodcut prints of the typographer Tissi, and the graphic collections, from which stand out the drawings of Andrea Brustolon, the works of Diziani, until the sheets of Demin and Paoletti. And then still the prints of the collection, among which there is the background Alpago-Novello that consists of more than 1400 sheets.

But who are the artists of the Bellunese museum collection? Let’s go through them in order and get to know a few.

1400s and 1500s

In this splendid residence that is living art, by way of its masterpieces, two active Bellunese of the 1400s and 1500s are Simone da Cusighe and Matteo Cesa, followed by Jacopo da Montagnana, known as one of the most important artists in the Venetian lands, for the renaissance language of Giovanni Bellini and Antonello da Messina. Do these names sound familiar? Then you will certainly also know Pomponio Amalteo, Domenico Tintoretto, Bernardino Licinio, Francesco Frigimelica or Palma il Giovane.

1600s, 1700s and 1800s

In the rooms of the second floor of the Civic Museum of Belluno one can find a few of the most important names in the museum while at the same time learning more about the driving themes and focal points of the history of art in Belluno.

Regarding the theme of the landscape, the key artists of these three centuries are Marco Ricci, Antonio Diziani, Giuseppe Zais, until Ippolito Caffi and Alessandro Seffer.
Belluno was also a land for wood sculptors, among which stand out Valentino Panciera Besarel and the even more famous Andrea Brustolon.
The exhibit proceeds with the sculpture of the 1800s and the works of the Risorgimento theme and portraiture.

The Bellunese from the 1500s to the 1800s

Also on the second floor of Palazzo Fulcis, more specifically in one of the covered hallways that faces the courtyard, the collection of votive tablets of the Church of Sant’Andrea is exhibited, which brings us back in time, to discover the grand devotion and also the apparel of the Bellunese population.

Sebastiano Ricci

Sebastiano Ricci is the star of the Civic Museum. Born in Belluno in 1659, during his lifetime he worked in both north and south Italy, as well as in England and France.

Observing the paintings of Sebastiano Ricci allows us to go on a voyage back in time through European painting, from the Baroque period to the Rococo. At the museum exhibited are La Pazienza di Giobbe, a work of the 1600s, the Riposo durante la fuga in Egitto, expression of a new and more free style, probably from the English period, La Testa della Samaritana, coming from the lost cycle of villa Belvedere in Belluno dated 1718 and Il satiro e la famiglia del contadino, work of mature production, as characterized by the style “di tocco” developed by Ricci himself.
Three other artworks of the Bellunese painter, conserved in the Civic Museum, are elsewhere in the museum route and are exhibited on the third floor, waiting to return to their original home, meaning the dressing room of Fulcis. These works are the monumental Caduta di Fetonte, l’Ercole e Onfale and l’Ercole al bivio.

A Brief History of the Civic Museum of Belluno

The history of the Civic Museum of Belluno begins in the year 1872 when the Bellunese doctor Antonion Giampiccoli decides to donate his collection of paintings to the community, on wood and canvas. To these were soon added anoher donation, that of Carlo Miari who decided to gift the entire collection of his father Florio, consisting of bronzes, medals, plaques, coin, seals, manuscripts and books.

To be honest the first real collection of the Civic Museum of Belluno goes back to 1837 when Belluno became instituted as the Gabinetto Provinciale Naturalistico della Provincia (Provincial Advisory Council on Nature), then Gabinetto di Storia Naturale e Industria Patria (Advisory Council of Natural History and Industrial Heritage), with the natural collections of the Bellunese doctor and botanist Alessandro Francesco Sandi, to which were also added the zoological collections of Angelo Doglioni.

In 1876 the museum was instituted the Provincial Conservatory Commission of art monuments and antiquity of Belluno and Osvaldo Monti was nominated inspector of excavations and monuments. For the exhibit of the civic collection, one of the most antique of Veneto, the palazzo del Collegio dei Giuristi, in piazza Duomo, was selected. This collection, until now, was at the home of the Civic Museum of Belluno.

In the years following the collection of the Civic Museum continued to grow, thanks to both donations and acquisitions.

The Barbarigo Madonna of the Hermitage on exhibit in Belluno.

The exhibit La Madonna Barbarigo dell’Ermitage  (The Barbarigo Madonna of the Hermitage)is a very relevant event, not only because it accompanies the reopening of the Museo Civico di Belluno, in one of the most beautiful palaces of the city, but above all because it brings the masterpiece of Tiziano to his birthplace.
167 years have passed since the the painting left the confines of Italy and now it is returning to the Dolomites, the lands where the genius Tiziano was born.

The subject depicted by Tiziano in the painting The Barbarigo Madonna is noteworthy for its great chromatic expressiveness, but above all because it represents a devotional model developed by the Master, replicated and copied for centuries to follow, beyond the 16th century.

The Bellunese exhibit La Madonna Barbarigo dell’Ermitage is the opportunity for comparing the masterpiece of the museum of St. Petersburg, with two other works of art. The first is a version autographed by the subject, coming from the Museum of Fine Arts of Budapest, entitled Madonna con il Bambino e san Paolo (Madonna with the Baby and Saint Paul), while the other is Madonna con il Bambino e Santa Caterina (Madonna with the Baby and St. Catherine), one of the most important replicas of art, conserved by the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

The exhibitLa Madonna Barbarigo dell’Ermitage would like to be an homage to the Cadorino painter in his homeland, and a wonderful gift for all of the Bellunese.

The Barbarigo Madonna, history of a painting.

The history of the painting The Barbarigo Madonna begins in Venice, around the mid 1500s.
In the magnificent lagoon city, more specifically on Calle dei Biri, where an important Italian painter once lived. His name is Tiziano Vecellio. All of you know the Cadorino painter, the master of color.

What was Tiziano doing in Venice? You must know that halfway through the 16th century was the era of the successful painter. Known and loved by those powerful at the time, as they commissioned important works, Tiziano was also a wise owner of the studio.

Tiziano had a son whose name was Pomponio Vecellio, and it was he who in 1581 sold the home of his father, who died in 1576, to a Venetian royal: Cristoforo Barbarigo. The Barbarigo bought the house and everything inside, even the paintings of the master. Among these paintings was the canvas depicting the Virgin Mary with the Child and Mary Magdalene, eventually taking the name The Barbarigo Madonna.

The Barbarigo Family lived in the Barbarigo Palace of the Terrazza, that in the 1700s became on of the primary places of cultural attraction in Venice. A treasure chest that contained one of the most famous art collections of the time, mostly thanks to the presence of various works of the Cadorino master.

Years passed and the descendants of Cristoforo decided to sell their entire collection, beloved by their ancestors, and so in 1850 the Tzar Nicholas purchased the entire Venetian collection.
The Barbarigo Madonna arrived at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, home of the Romanov family until 1917. Here the masterpiece was restored with a yellowish hue, that does a justice to its high quality.

The Barbarigo Madonna today

Today the Barbarigo Madonna is conserved in the rooms of the Russian museum, restored by Sergei Kisseliov, the specialist of the Hermitage, who succeeded in bringing it back to its ancient splendor.
The painting, on exhibit at Fulcis Palace, from January 27th to May 1st, 2017, is a masterpiece and example of the excellence of Tiziano.

The colors used by the master are intense, giving live to the figures and defining the beauty of the details. The face of the Virgin Mary, of pale rosy complexion, stands out in the heavenly context of its veil. This veil marks the perfect passage from shadow to light, in a perfect return to the depth. But were all of these tones of blue necessary to create the cape of the Barbarigo Madonna? Tiziano used three of them, each different from the next.

The background of the painting is composed from a mixture of muddy, ferrous (ochre) and white lead pigments. The imprimatur is instead absent, the layers of color were applied directly on the background and joined together by flaxseed oil.

The exhibit La Madonna Barbarigo dell’Ermitage, curated by Irina Artemieva e Denis Ton, and publicized by the City of Belluno, thanks to the availability of the Hermitage museum, the support of the Fondazione Cariverona and the collaboration of Hermitage Italy.

Oltre le Vette 2016, the twentieth edition

The twentieth edition of Oltre le vette has begun: the festival dedicated to the metaphors, men and places of the mountains, experienced through film, books, exhibits, conventions and meetings with noteworthy mountaineers. The theme of this year is “Dolomites of water,” to underline the marine origins and the continuous transformation of these extraordinary mountains with events of water, ice and snow.

From October 7th to 16th returns the long-awaited festival Oltre le vette, organized by Comune di Belluno and theFondazione Teatri delle Dolomiti and with the economic support of Fondazione Cariverona, Enel and several other private sponsors.

The program this year is even more prestigious and varied; it includes film projections, documentaries, meetings with prominent authors and mountaineers, tours, exhibits, performances and much more. And so Belluno gets ready to fill up for 10 days of events dedicated to the mountains and their relationship with the water, through various perspectives that will allow the participants to understand the numerous shades of our Dolomites, of our land and its relationship with the water.

Oltre le Vette – The deep bond between our mountains and the water

The theme of the twentieth edition of the celebrated Bellunese festival, we have noted, is “Dolomites of water”; let’s find out why.

Here’s what was published on the official Facebook page:

“‘Dolomites of water’ is the theme of this year, a title that wishes to underline the deep connection, not always felt, between our mountains and the water. It’s not just that the Dolomites come–literally–from the sea, but also the waters that have shaped and constructed this resplendent landscape. And we, today, with these waters, becoming always more precious and always more important, must consider our economy, our tourism and our lifestyle. The rest is not just a coincidence: artists of every era have found their inspiration from the water and from the mountains, gathering, perhaps first, and better than others, the great bond that unites them.

And it continues…

“Therefore one speaks of the rocks and the water, as well as the energy, landscape, arts, people both historical and imaginary. We will discuss their economic value, environmental, scientific and technical challenges. From here we can comprehend the importance of the water–and all of our waters–through art, through history, through Alpine society. We will discover that universal value still felt for people in every place and culture, and era, for men and women of any age of their lives.”

The complete program

Dolomites of water: a bridge between the pale mountains and the lagoon

A new exhibit has just opened; it celebrates and reminds all of us of the grandeur and wonders of the Dolomites, creating a bridge to the other unique place of our land: Venice and its lagoon.

At Palazzo Crepadona, in the historical center of Belluno, from September 16th, it is possible to visit the large exhibit,“Dolomiti d’acqua – Il viaggio della pittura dai monti verso Venezia e la laguna”, a show that is part of the program for the 20th edition of the festival Oltre le vette – Metafore, uomini, luoghi della montagna, produced by the towns of Belluno andSan Vito di Cadore, where it was partially previewed during the month of August.

The symbolic relationship between the Dolomites and Venice

The exhibit Dolomiti d’acqua consists of a hypothetical artistic voyage along the route of the Piave Valley and its main tributaries, from the Dolomites to Venice.

For centuries, the Piave river has represented a very useful means of transport for moving various goods and the timber fundamental for construction and shipbuilding from the Bellunese mountains all the way to Venice. A path through time and space, it will bring the visitor to appreciate, with the passage of decades, how our landscape transformed and how the artists radically changed their way of representing reality at the beginning of the 1900s.

Giovanni Granzotto writes in the preface of the exhibit’s beautiful catalogue: “This year the exhibition fair (…), which sets out to celebrate and remind all of us of the wonders and grandeur of unique places, the Dolomites, hopes to build a bridge to the other unique place of our land: Venice and its lagoon. There has always been an osmotic relationship between these two worlds, and thus we have sought to create an exhibit that could recount more than a century of artists falling in love with at least one of these places, with all their heart and soul.”

The artworks displayed

The artworks presented represent a cross-section of Venetian landscapes and lifestyles from the mid-1800s and 1900s by way of the main national artists of this period: Guglielmo CiardiLuigi CimaGiorgio De ChiricoFilippo de Pisis, Tancredi Parmeggiani, Fiorenzo Tomea, Virgilio Guidi, just to name a few.

At the end of the big exhibit, in a room of the Palazzo Crepadona, visitors will also find an important surprise: the exhibit “Viaggi e sguardi – Acquerelli di montagna tra Otto e Novecento”. It is a small exhibit of artworks from Bellunese collectors that hope to be the core of an important and original project for the future. You can see watercolors by Compton, Gilbert, Donne and other Europeans masters, all artists of great fame and talent.

La exhibit will be held in Belluno, at the Palazzo Crepadona, from September 16th to November 1st 2016.

Leggere le sere, the festival of theater, readings, music and dance in Belluno

From July 5th to 26th, the “encounters without the curtain” return to the courtyards of the city with four events each Tuesday in some of the most captivating places of our city to spend pleasant evenings among theater, readings, music and dance. The Associazione Culturale Bretelle Lasche announces the 2016 edition of the “Leggere le sere” Festival.

Here are the details of the program for the 2016 edition of Leggerelesere – incontri senza sipario nei cortili della città (Read the evenings – encounters without the curtain in the courtyards of the city) – from July 5th to 26th 2016 in Belluno, at 9:00pm. Single entrance is 3 euros. In case of bad weather, the event will take place at the Centro Giovanni XXIII.

The festival begins on July 5th, at 9:00pm, in the garden of Villa Miari, on Via Cipro, with the show “La Cura” written by and featuring Barbara Eforo, prose actress renowned by TV audiences for the show “L’albero azzurro”. The text is dedicated to the role of the caregiver who tells the story of the lives lived and known from the people she assists, until her life blends with theirs.

On July 12th, in the garden of the Villa Doglioni Dalmas on Via del Piave, the theatrical dance performance begins with the company “Il teatro Pachuco” in “Coup de Foudre”, featuring Lisa Da Boit and Rudi Galindo. Through the dance performance they share with the audience a sort of silent film that recounts love at first sight, in other words, that which in Italian is called “colpo di fulmine,” or bolt of lightning. Following, the “Korarte” Company with Laura Zago and Giorgio Tollot in “File Life,” which narrates, through dance, a fragile love lived in the past, in the present and perhaps in the future desire.

In the Garden of the Gabelli Schools, on Via Cavour, on July 19th, Chiara Becchimanzi will star, with the voice of Beatrice Burgo, of “Principesse e Sfumature”, a performance both funny and risqué, thus likely more suitable for an adult audience, written and directed by this Roman actress of the Valdrada Company, who, for years, has collaborated with le Bretelle Lasche.

The final event, on July 26th, in the Cloister of the Istituto “Catullo”, on Via Loreto with a new performance by the Bretelle Lasche “All’ombra del lupo” (In the Shadow of the Wolf): the well-known fable of Sergej Prokof’ev will be interpreted by the performance of shadow, as conceived by Nicola Pauletti, with the music of Gabriele Soppelsa and the original drawings of Agnese Meroni, with the company of a dozen or so actors from the “Bretelle”.

Admission for each show is €3.00.
