The Baldenich Joke

When a trick becomes the most effective weapon.

Maybe not everyone knows that even the Belluno prison can boast a famous story of escape: that which is known to history as the Baldenich Joke when twelve partisans managed to free seventy political prisoners.

It is June 16, 1944 and all is ready for the mission, Mariano Mandolesi, known by comrades as Carlo, leads his men to the gates of the Baldenich prison, where the Germans held their prisoners and that morning inside there are sixteen policemen and ten prison guards.

Their intent is to free Milo, who would be transferred to Trento by them in a few days to be shot and all the others with him, everyday victims of torture and ill-treatment. The whole operation was to take place without a fight, without a shot, without shedding further blood.

And this happened: the Baldenich Joke begins when Carlo comes with eight companions in German uniforms saying they have four prisoners to deliver. In broken German Carlo and others are turning to the police but they ask them for their incarceration documents.

The partisans have none and they try to take time, no guard realizes who is hiding really under the German jackets and hats, and they ask: “No one who speaks Italian?” Then came the prison guard who had just finished his monitoring tour and immediately becomes blocked by Biondino, who takes the pile with the keys to the cells.

Once the prisoners were freed, and the prison guards and police jailed the handful of fugitives go on foot towards the mountains. The prison guards are able to sound the alarm only twenty minutes later when Charles and the others are already at the slopes of Mount Serva, tired but excited to be able to realize the Baldenich Joke, without even firing a shot.

Belluno: an adorable poem!

An unpolluted, gracious, Northern Italian town,

Instantly wipes out stress and frown,

Embraced by the most beautiful mountains, called the Dolomites,

A  Natural Heritage for its might and rights!!

Nearby villages so traditional and historical,

Inspiring an air so delightful and magical.

Rich in culture, beauty, food and art,

The ideal vacation place to start.

The town centre, with ancient buildings, artisan shops and cobbled streets,

The beautiful Martiri square, to relax, stroll , greet and meet.

Pale, yellow buildings, Roman ruins situated high on a Hill

Trees, green parks, meadows, country side, amidst an air so still

The museum, in the centre, in time takes you back,

Especially to trace an incredible historical track,

A visit to the chapels and domes is a must,

In my words you can certainly trust!

A town of right dimension, safe and hospitable,

Ensuring a stay most pleasant and comfortable

Enjoy eating and shopping in the centre,

Greeted by the assistants and locals as you enter.

Polite, reserved, respectful and discreet,

Are the locals wherever you meet!

Important shows, operas and concerts are held at the theatre,

The locals are considered a sincere “thermometer”

Whether the show is a failure or satisfaction,

Can be judged by the locals spontaneous reaction.

Their appreciation they will clap and show,

Their disappointment you are sure to Know!!

Sincere and correct they are in their feelings,

In pleasure, business or other dealings!

A-VIP can walk around without disguising his face,

Bellunese pass by, respecting his private space.

Numerous sports like mountain climbing, skiing, cycling hiking to do,

Indeed so many activities you just haven’t a clue!

Many exciting events during the year to enjoy,

For the sporty, adventurous, food-lovers, girl or boy,

Music, dance, food, wine, theatre and show,

Exciting opportunities to experience and know,

Feasting, fares, exhibitions, art and craft throughout the seasons,

Created and organized just about for every reason!!

San Martino triggers off the winter fair,

Wood-log sculptured with art and care,

Perfume of fresh, chipped-chopped wood  lingers in the air,

In front of the sculptures people stand and stare!!

San Nicolo, drags his donkey on the street.

Distributing sweets to every child he meets.

Suddenly the centre is beautifully illuminated,

The christmas atmosphere is created!!

Christmas decorations, typical products sold in wooden houses,

Visited by tourists, children and happy spouses,

Roasted chestnuts and brule’ is the menu of the day

Making locals and tourists happy and gay!

“Pastin and polenta” is the typical food to try,

Which goes well with wine, both sweet or dry!!

A leisurely walk on the cobble-stoned street,

Simple way to just have a treat!

Summer days, tables and chairs are spread outside the bars,

Where the centre is limited to traffic and cars!

“Happy hour” is the moment with friends to share,

Sometimes even with hungry pigeons, hard to bare!!

Spritz is the favourite summer drink,

Mixed with prosecco and water I think!

Famous Venice and Cortina is not very far away,

Can be visited within a day.

So Belluno is a place to explore,

With many surprises for you in Store!!!

Expressions of Faith

“Expressions of Faith: votive boards, carvings, xylographic matrices and other treasures” is the new exhibition at the Belluno Civic Museum. Frequent natural disasters, recurrent famines and subsequent pestilences, total absence of prevention and prophylaxis, unreliability and cost of medical treatments, the sequence of both domestic and work related accidents, the insecurity of roads, and thousands of other hard to control and forsee accidents, made people’s life kind of a mined land where surviving was often very complex, if not dangerous. To all people without exceptions, both noblemen and clergymen and wealthy people and craftmen, but above all to the crowds of poor people became obvious to rely on devine grace, in particular on the protection of Saints, of the Virgin Mary, and on their compassionate help. Faith was their essential daily viaticum, made of never ending religious discourses and acts of devotions performed endlessly, even in a maniacal way, where the correlation between guilt and punishment was a well accepted awareness, because of its inevitability, in order to live and hope in a future as much as possible free from sufferings, sudden sorrows and miserables life situations.

That’s why there was a wide diffusion of printed images, true means of diffusion of catholic devotion, religious enthusiasm, and of the practice of domestic prayer. Those provided with the unique effectiveness and iconographic immediacy for the nearly general illiteracy which united mountain men and ploughmen to the poorest and most humble members of poverty stricken urban classes.

The exposed works bring back in their direct and effective immediacy to the experience of centuries of Belluno folks. They speak to us, they tell us all the drama and the joy of surviving, they show deep gratitude, true emotions of fraternity. They originate a urgency of life and serenity, a desperate need to face and overcome trials and dangers often greater than both individual forces and the possibilities of an entire population. Numerous expressions of art and faith, a sincere and deep lesson of courage, trust, and hope, an experience which settles in our present and can provide more then a few causes of reflection.

A city of springs

Belluno is a city of water where the Ardo meets the river Piave, it is also crossed by many small streams that flow through the land and the countryside. Belluno is also rich in fountains, within the towns and villages they total 270. Stone buildings, carved friezes and the traditional granite tanks, troughs and sinks. Located in the streets or at crossroads, these are precious to the historical centre. They are located and built taking advantage of streams and rivulets with the express purpose to quench the thirst of men, their animals and provide water for domestic use; this is a fascinating journey to discover.

Art and beauty of Belluno

Within an ancient circle of high walls, with towers and turrets, as well as a castle, the city today has many reminders of its rich past: the three ancient gates – Dojona, Dante and Hugo, the precious fountains, the Cathedral with the incredible works of art and outstanding bell of Juvarra. The Gothic Church of St. Stephen, the nineteenth-century theatre, the Votive Church of San Rocco are all gems found within the historic center. The Martyrs’ Square is surrounded by a wide frame of arcades, like the living room of the city, with the wonderful manicured gardens. The nearby Piazza delle Erbe is a small treasure chest enclosed by precious ancient palaces. A few steps away is the Piazza del Duomo, onto which the Basilica of St. Martin faces, the Red Palace, the City Hall, the Prefecture- once the palace of the Venetian rectors, the Auditorium, the ancient seat of the Bishops warriors, and the Palace of lawyers, which now houses the Museo Civico, rich in works of art.

Nature in Belluno

Mother Nature has certainly made herself at home in Belluno. Part of the territory falls within the Belluno Dolomites National Park (the only town in Italy to do so) and the mountains that surround the city have UNESCO World Heritage status. Belluno is surrounded by greenery, touched by water, and crowned by mountains, nestled as it is in the foothills of the Dolomites.

In Belluno life is good: so much so that it has topped quality of life charts in consecutive years. Here you can walk, jog, spin – in fact participate in almost any outdoor activity – right on your doorstep.
Although we ourselves are based in the city’s park and gardens, our hearts are in the meadows and farms that surround us.

A city where sport is champion

Where there is nature there is often sport. It is no surprise, then, that Belluno has plenty of sports facilities; tennis, bowling, swimming, and diving, to name a few. However, outdoor and adventure sports is what we do best.

Offering meadows and forests to explore by foot or horseback, rivers for paddling or fishing, and mountains that seem to be made for paragliding.

The hill of Nevegàl has fantastic cross-country and downhill skiing; in the warmer months white-knuckle dirt tracks emerge, perfect for mountain biking.

The city itself, with its gentle slopes, is a paradise for jogging and cycling and that’s not to mention Nordic walking, climbing and much more.

Think of Belluno as your own open-air gym.
