Small is beautiful

In Belluno it is not only the historical centre that attracts, indeed, many treasures are found within the surrounding villages. The immediate surroundings of the city are in fact dotted with small villages, more than thirty, each with its own church, surprisingly rich in works of art, its cortivi, courtyards overlooked by the typical houses Belluno, stone and wood with balconies rich with flowers, flanked by columns. Some villages have their own cemetery, tiny and guarded with love, almost all maintain beautiful stone sinks, in which once residents would have washed and where you can still drink fresh water. As is tradition, each house has its own garden, not only useful, but well-kept and decorated with flowers planted alongside vegetables. Small miniature worlds to fall in love at first sight!

[vimeo http://vimeo.com/54659308 w=550]

Veneto is more than just Venice! Here is the first video of our Adorable Belluno seen by the guys from Little-Italy, the side project undertaken by Can’t Forget Italy team, lead by Mikaela Bandini.

In an article about Adorable Belluno posted on Can’t forget Italy, they say:

More than just Venice. We have proof that there is a lot more to the Veneto region than Venice and Verona. A few weeks ago the guys from Adorable Belluno gave us an amazing opportunity to discover this exceptional city, which has somehow gone relatively under the radar. Until now. Belluno is positively teeming with enough historic architecture to satisfy both die-hard enthusiasts and casual sightseers alike, while also boasting a varied terrain that can challenge the outdoor-adventure-types among us. And, this being Italy, a great selection of places to drink and eat local specialities (read more) – Info: www.little-italy.com – www.cantforget.it

A city of many parts

Belluno has a rich history with many influential characters, each having made their own mark over the centuries on the city’s architectural and artistic heritage; the evolution of the city is evident from the ancient Roman Via Mezzaterra, to the medieval, Renaissance and Baroque buildings.

Perhaps the ruins of the Venetian Republic are the most recognisable of them all; it is hard to ignore the many stone lions still found lurking around the city. Of course there are many other fine examples of work including the theatre designed by Seguisini, dating back to the 800s; he also built a replica in Innsbruck, Austria. Moving forward a century to the 900s, you will see great palaces, private homes, public buildings and Ponte della Vittoria.

With so much historic influence, the best way to absorb the beauty of the City is by foot; there are 5 themed walks through Belluno tracing the path of its history, art and architecture.
