Like in the past editions, the ice-rink gave moments of incredible fun during this year, thank to a cold and cloudless winter.

Expressions of Faith

“Expressions of Faith: votive boards, carvings, xylographic matrices and other treasures” is the new exhibition at the Belluno Civic Museum. Frequent natural disasters, recurrent famines and subsequent pestilences, total absence of prevention and prophylaxis, unreliability and cost of medical treatments, the sequence of both domestic and work related accidents, the insecurity of roads, and thousands of other hard to control and forsee accidents, made people’s life kind of a mined land where surviving was often very complex, if not dangerous. To all people without exceptions, both noblemen and clergymen and wealthy people and craftmen, but above all to the crowds of poor people became obvious to rely on devine grace, in particular on the protection of Saints, of the Virgin Mary, and on their compassionate help. Faith was their essential daily viaticum, made of never ending religious discourses and acts of devotions performed endlessly, even in a maniacal way, where the correlation between guilt and punishment was a well accepted awareness, because of its inevitability, in order to live and hope in a future as much as possible free from sufferings, sudden sorrows and miserables life situations.

That’s why there was a wide diffusion of printed images, true means of diffusion of catholic devotion, religious enthusiasm, and of the practice of domestic prayer. Those provided with the unique effectiveness and iconographic immediacy for the nearly general illiteracy which united mountain men and ploughmen to the poorest and most humble members of poverty stricken urban classes.

The exposed works bring back in their direct and effective immediacy to the experience of centuries of Belluno folks. They speak to us, they tell us all the drama and the joy of surviving, they show deep gratitude, true emotions of fraternity. They originate a urgency of life and serenity, a desperate need to face and overcome trials and dangers often greater than both individual forces and the possibilities of an entire population. Numerous expressions of art and faith, a sincere and deep lesson of courage, trust, and hope, an experience which settles in our present and can provide more then a few causes of reflection.

A city of springs

Belluno is a city of water where the Ardo meets the river Piave, it is also crossed by many small streams that flow through the land and the countryside. Belluno is also rich in fountains, within the towns and villages they total 270. Stone buildings, carved friezes and the traditional granite tanks, troughs and sinks. Located in the streets or at crossroads, these are precious to the historical centre. They are located and built taking advantage of streams and rivulets with the express purpose to quench the thirst of men, their animals and provide water for domestic use; this is a fascinating journey to discover.

Art and beauty of Belluno

Within an ancient circle of high walls, with towers and turrets, as well as a castle, the city today has many reminders of its rich past: the three ancient gates – Dojona, Dante and Hugo, the precious fountains, the Cathedral with the incredible works of art and outstanding bell of Juvarra. The Gothic Church of St. Stephen, the nineteenth-century theatre, the Votive Church of San Rocco are all gems found within the historic center. The Martyrs’ Square is surrounded by a wide frame of arcades, like the living room of the city, with the wonderful manicured gardens. The nearby Piazza delle Erbe is a small treasure chest enclosed by precious ancient palaces. A few steps away is the Piazza del Duomo, onto which the Basilica of St. Martin faces, the Red Palace, the City Hall, the Prefecture- once the palace of the Venetian rectors, the Auditorium, the ancient seat of the Bishops warriors, and the Palace of lawyers, which now houses the Museo Civico, rich in works of art.

Nature in Belluno

Mother Nature has certainly made herself at home in Belluno. Part of the territory falls within the Belluno Dolomites National Park (the only town in Italy to do so) and the mountains that surround the city have UNESCO World Heritage status. Belluno is surrounded by greenery, touched by water, and crowned by mountains, nestled as it is in the foothills of the Dolomites.

In Belluno life is good: so much so that it has topped quality of life charts in consecutive years. Here you can walk, jog, spin – in fact participate in almost any outdoor activity – right on your doorstep.
Although we ourselves are based in the city’s park and gardens, our hearts are in the meadows and farms that surround us.

A city where sport is champion

Where there is nature there is often sport. It is no surprise, then, that Belluno has plenty of sports facilities; tennis, bowling, swimming, and diving, to name a few. However, outdoor and adventure sports is what we do best.

Offering meadows and forests to explore by foot or horseback, rivers for paddling or fishing, and mountains that seem to be made for paragliding.

The hill of Nevegàl has fantastic cross-country and downhill skiing; in the warmer months white-knuckle dirt tracks emerge, perfect for mountain biking.

The city itself, with its gentle slopes, is a paradise for jogging and cycling and that’s not to mention Nordic walking, climbing and much more.

Think of Belluno as your own open-air gym.

Small is beautiful

In Belluno it is not only the historical centre that attracts, indeed, many treasures are found within the surrounding villages. The immediate surroundings of the city are in fact dotted with small villages, more than thirty, each with its own church, surprisingly rich in works of art, its cortivi, courtyards overlooked by the typical houses Belluno, stone and wood with balconies rich with flowers, flanked by columns. Some villages have their own cemetery, tiny and guarded with love, almost all maintain beautiful stone sinks, in which once residents would have washed and where you can still drink fresh water. As is tradition, each house has its own garden, not only useful, but well-kept and decorated with flowers planted alongside vegetables. Small miniature worlds to fall in love at first sight!
