CLOROFILLA is a meeting of artists, muralists and those who work primarily in communicating and building public spaces.

CLOROFILLA began in 2015 as the idea of Ericailcane in collaboration with the Casa dei Beni Comuni, an open citizen laboratory, that works in the region for the common good and to build social spaces for sharing.
Last year, for two weeks in June and July, some of the walls of the Casa dei Beni Comuni (formerly Piave Barracks) and the city of Belluno, were painted for storytelling, an idea of public art created by the people, for the people.
In the north of Italy, close to the geographic borders of the country, Belluno is a splendid oasis in the desert of the mountains. The Dolomites, the heritage of humanity, make the frame for this initiative that brings together artists and citizens.

The Long Night of the Churches

The Long Night of the Churches

Bellunolanote, in collaboration with Pastorale Giovanile di Belluno-Feltre, is organizing the first edition of “The Long Night of the Churches”, the first sleepless night to take place inside houses of worship of the city!

Bellunolanotte, the civic association led by Stefano Casagrande, always very active and innovative, presents a new type of event: the “Long Night of the Churches,” which brings together culture, art, music and theater in a key of reflection and spirituality. All of which will happen inside the churches of our city! The event is in collaboration with the Pastorale Giovanile Belluno-Feltre and Don Luciano Todesco, who embraced this project.

Friday, June 10th Loreto, Santo Stefano, San Pietro and San Rocco will host events tied to music, theater, chanting, alternating with moments of meditation.

There will even be access to places and rooms usually closed to the public, such as the splendid cloisters, by way of guided tours organized for the event, all in one day.

The map of the churches:

Stefano Casagrande, president of BellunoLaNotte commented on the event:

“It will be a true and real sleepless night! The idea is inspired by the “Lange Nacht Kirche” that has been taking place in Austria for 10 years in nearly 700 churches simultaneously, with the objective of involving the church in the social life of the city, to give a sign of modernity and presence in the community. The hope is that here in Belluno it can be an event that will grow for years to come. For the audience we expect to have not only families and children, but also many young people interested in art and culture, who, moreover, will be actively captivated for the entire day; and perhaps even some tourists will arrive! We are hoping to involve the many civic associations that have been active in culture for years and can thus, hopefully, help with promotion. We have already received sponsorship from the City and Province of Belluno, as well as the Region of Veneto, that realized the importance of the event.”

The program is ready and will be detailed in the coming days. But the first names confirmed are all of renowned and important professionals, leaders in their fields: Anna Olivier, who will also be the Artistic Director of the entire event, in a religious theatrical performance together with Giulia Corradi. And then the singer-songwriter Giorgio Fornasier, Maria Grazia Feltre and Stefano Emmi with a religious opera, a musician duet: Chiara Gasparotto on the harp and Angelo Martin on the oboe, the Scuola Miari with Mirko Ballico in an organ concert, Paolo Fornasier in a concert for pianoforte and finally we can’t leave out the electronic music, like with GizA DJs. There will also be the Coro Minimo, Voci dai Cortivi and the Bellunese Choral Group. Many more performers will be announced in the coming days.

At the same time, the official Facebook page launched: Lunga Notte delle Chiese, where you can find all of the updated information and news that will follow in the next few days. It will be possible to download the program.

Villa Montalban, at the foot of Mount Serva

A villa that tells the story of heroic knights, moments of true magnificence of the story of Belluno, the very difficult period of Austrian-German invasion and that today hosts cultural and sport events.

All of the Bellunesi know where Villa Montalban is, a bit because it is one of the architectural treasures of Belluno, but also because it is often the theater for big parties that bring together many people, as well as cultural activities and sports events.

Today we want to tell you the history of this isolated villa that sits on a flat terrain and behind which, like a boundless and dark scenery, rises the steep and wooded southern face of Mount Serva.

We do not know the exact date of the construction of the villa, nor who was the architect of the project. Over the years various theories have been created to answer this question, nevertheless the opinion most shared is that it was built in the first half of the 1600s.

However what is certain is that the compound was commissioned by the famous Fulcis family, one of the richest and most powerful of Belluno, who over centuries built various buildings in the historical center of Belluno and other villas in the countryside.  Do you know why the Fulcis family was so rich? Thanks to military activity. Many members of this family, in fact, were Jerusalem knights active in the wars against the Turks, which could guarantee the Fulcis family would have had numerous and influential friendships even outside of the Bellunese region.

Of the Fulcis family we said: but then why is it called Villa Montalban? We will explain right away. After the death of the last descendant of the Fulcis family, Fulcio Fulcis, which actually happened at the villa, the property of the estate was passed to the grandson Damiano Miari, prior to the use of the double surname Miari-Fulcis; a few years later however, by way of marriage, he was succeeded by the Montalban counts. The mystery is solved! Even if it is to say that the full name of the villa would be Fulcis-Montalban, however it is known to all by only its second name.

But let’s get back to the features of the villa. You must know that at the height of its splendor this Bellunese pearl controlled a vast agricultural property: take note that the land extended from the village of Sargnano until Andreane, and from the slopes of the Serva to as far as the Piave river. Today the property of the villa is notably reduced and includes “only” 7 hectares; furthermore the land surrounding the villa no longer conserves the original statues and fountains.

Really, because the land in front of the villa was certainly not as we see it today. Try to imagine how it must have been arriving in front of a carriage in the golden age: before the eyes of the visitor is revealed a long street with gates, picturesquely lined up with the southern edge of the villa, that open to a suggestive path that ends in the courtyard, turning around the fountain and then going down in front of the portico of the entrance. It is not by chance that Villa Montalban is considered “perhaps the best example of typical monuments built in the Bellunese valley” (Alpago Novello), and this is for two reasons: to demonstrate the wealth of the family, but also to celebrate their military victories.

The structure, externally simple and linear, on the inside once guarded precious decorations that today are mostly lost.

On the facade of the villa are two large painted crests that show the broad-winged eagle of the Fulcis with the star of the Knights of Malta, the claws at an enemy. All around military trophies, canons and flags. Below each of these crests is a sundial.

Villa Montalban during World War I, however, and in particular during the Austro-German invasion of 1917-1918, was seriously damaged and thus abandoned, becoming subject to vandalism until the 1930s.

Later on the villa was acquired by the Pontifica Opera di Assistenza that transformed it for community use; in 1958 there was significant restoration work and finally in 1976 the entire estate was acquired by the City of Belluno. In recent years it has been home to a professional school, sports clubs and cultural events.

A quirk: the villa hosted the marshal Massena in 1799, the viceroy Eugenio Napoleon in 1809, Victor Emmanuel III and Elena of Savoy in 1903.

Coming soon: The Festival of the Fisciot

The ancient festival of Our Lady of Sorrows is one of the most anticipated events in Belluno. The historical center fills with colorful stands, aromatic flowers and crowds of people who greet one another as they celebrate the arrival of spring.

Everything is ready for the long-awaited Festival of the Fisciot, the holy celebration and gathering of the community with which the city of Belluno greets the flower season.

The celebration has ancient origins: since 1716, the statue of Madonna dei Sette dolori (Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows), used by the Bellunese citizenry to commemorate the end of a terrible epidemic of pestilence, has been carried in a procession across the historical center, two Sundays before Easter Sunday. And this year the tradition lives on: Sunday March 13th is the annual Festival of the Fisciot!

But do you know why it is called this? It gets its name from the “fischietti di richiamo” (whistles of excitement), which once upon a time were among the items most sold by local artisans at their stands on the streets of the city center as part of this Sunday festival.

The details: the events of the 2016 Festival of the Fisciot

Spread out across the entire city center, including Via Dante and Via Cavour, there will be more than 200 vendors with stands selling candies, toys, glassware, ceramics, wood and fabric, and even jewelry, ornaments, paintings, discs, cassette tapes, wicker products, copper, glasses, aromatic essences,  honey, leather goods, umbrellas, scarves, balloons and of course, regional food and drink.

Furthermore, this year in Piazza Piloni will be host to the exhibit market of fine food and tasting, while Piazza dei Martiri will be host to the market of local agricultural products, managed by Unione Montana Bellunese.

In Piazza Duomo, once again there will be the market “Fiori in Città: la Città sboccia” (Flowers in the City: the City blooms), as well as the antiques market “Cose di vecchie case” (Objects from old houses) that with its selected vendors is one of the most anticipated and popular events, before its return for the summer season. Piazzale Marconi will be the setting for a stand selling seasonal fruits.

Beginning at 10:45am in Piazza Duomo, at the corner of the former courthouse, the marching band “Citta di Belluno” (City of Belluno) will perform. The traditional procession will occur in the same place at 4:00pm.

Free shuttle service

Top 10 things you miss about Belluno

Time once again for our regular blog on the Top 10 things you miss about Belluno.

This time we take a different point of view: people who had or wanted to leave Belluno tell us what they miss about our town.

There are many ex citizens who emigrated from Belluno in search of a better life. There a multitude of reasons why they left: for love, work, they escaped from war, or they just went on a holiday and decided not to return.

Our compatriots have a new life, a new culture, they eat different foods and some even speak another language.

We conducted a survey of our Adorable friends who live in another country. We must admit that our friends’ stories are truely interesting, at times entertaining, others quite moving.

Ready for a bit of nostalgia? Let’s take a count down of our Top 10.

10 #scents and flavours. The smell of newly-harvested hay and of snowfall at the end of November. The scent of our famous “panino col pastin”, a perfect antidote to those long aperitifs. “Polenta e schiz” is synonymous of “home”, and “radici da prà col lardo” that only tastes this good in Belluno.

9 #markets. The friendly atmosphere of Saturday morning markets, minus the chaos. It’s not just a time for shopping, but a great excuse for a chat.

8 #summer festivals. There are many things which make our festivals simple but memorable. Eating on plastic plates – lucky if you make it to the table without dropping some food! Singing the same old songs around the stage, and complaining the next day that they (the songs) are always the same.

7 #walks. Walks after a typical Bellunese lunch, or in the late afternoon after a hard day’s work. The beauty of Belluno: nature is a stone’s throw from your doorway.

6 #home. There’s no place like home. There’s no substitute for being able to close your eyes and know exactly where you are.

5 #chats. There’s always an opportunity for a chat: on the street or at the supermarket.

4. #drink. A drink is not just a drink, it’s almost like a ritual for the Bellunesi. A glass of red or white, the Sunday morning aperitif, or even a coffee at the local bar are opportunities for a friendly chat.

3 #mountains. Waking up in the morning and seeing the Pink Dolomites. Colours and reflections that you can’t find anywhere else. The sensation of protection: the Dolomite Mountains seem to embrace Belluno and are a constant reference point.

2 #family. The family you left behind in Belluno. This is the hardest part of all: facing a new city or town alone.

There are moments in which nostalgia has a way of hitting you in the stomach. Sometimes I think it would be nice to drop by my mum’s after work.

1 #everything. I don’t know how to put this into words, but the truth is even though many would say that Belluno has nothing, well, I think it has a lot to offer.

A warm thank you to all the Adorable Bellunesi who live elsewhere and who shared their thoughts with us.

See you soon

Memorial Day: lest we forget

January 27, 1945, three in the afternoon, Auschwitz. A chilly day of a particularly harsh winter. The gates of the Polish death camp are torn down by the Red Army during its rapid advance from Vistola to Oder. At the head of the department it was Marshal Konev who first entered the lager.

January 27, 1945, three in the afternoon, Auschwitz. A written sign, “Arbeit macht frei”,welcomes the soldiers of the Red Army. Through their eyes the world will come to know how hell is made, and will never be the same.

January 27, 1945, three in the afternoon, Auschwitz. A liberation that has nothing joyful for those in Auschwitz who managed not to lose their lives; there are in fact too many mixed feelings of the survivors, the humiliation, the madness, the shame of being saved, the mistrust in mankind. Primo Levi tells us about it well.

A horror that touched everyone, including Belluno. Maybe not everyone knows that 983 people were deported from the province, of which 882 natives and about a hundred from outside. An articulate and complex framework, that of the deportation in the Belluno area, as explained by Professor Enrico Bacchetti of the Historical Institute of the Resistance and of the Contemporary Age-ISBREC, the leader of a research project aimed at the reconstruction of the history of those who, in the territory of Belluno, have known deportation and imprisonment.

During the conference entitled “Towards a historical biographical dictionary of deportation in the confines of Belluno”, held at the headquarters of the State Archives of Belluno on January 26, 2014, Professor Bacchetti insisted on the importance of studying the phenomenon of deportation: “Historians have been wondering for years about how many actually were deported in World War II”- says Professor of ISBEC – “maybe 10 or 12 million. But they are only figures that are the result of estimates, based on the documentation of the coffers of the lagers”.

The purpose of this research work is to approach the exact numbers starting from the local history, to build a historical geographic dictionary which is configured as a monument of paper due to those who paid such a high price  of war. Hence the appeal to all the inhabitants of the province of Belluno: collaborate in the construction of this important research through your memories of your families, of your acquaintances. Only in this way you will be able to to build a document as complete as possible, which can give a precise idea of the phenomenon of deportation in the province of Belluno.

January 27, 2015, Belluno. An invitation to participate actively, collaborating to keep alive the memory of the Holocaust because “things that are forgotten” says Mario Rigoni Stern “may return”.
