SALUTI AL MUSEO:

FROM THE BOARD OF JURISTS TO FULCIS PALACE

-Wednesday August 17th-

The day will be dedicatedly entirely to the upcoming inauguration of the new museum at the prestigious Fulcis Palace. Citizens and tourists will have the opportunity to visit the museum for the last time before its relocation. To reflect, accompanied by exports, on its opportunities and challenges offered by the opening of a new museum space, of which the cloister will be accessible for the first time and on an unusual street, for a moving themed event with music and images that recount the relocation from the old to the new museum. The birth of the Civic Museum is indebted to the donation made in part by the Bellunese doctor Antonio Giampiccoli of his own gallery in 1872, which became the foundation of the museum collection. And subsequently others like that of Count Florio Miari, that of scientific materials donated by the provincial council of nature and industry, that of the geologist Tommaso Antonio Catullo, of the ornithologist Angelo Doglioni, of the botanist Alessandro Fracesco Sandi and others. The Board of Jurists palace had just been restored following the earthquake of 1873 when the museum opened to the public in 1876.

——

Currently the museum houses paintings, sculptures, plaques, bronze works, drawings and prints, the Zambelli-Perale collection of art objects, the jewelry collection of Prosdocimi Bozzoli and the Archeological Collection. The first curator of the museum was Osvaldo Monti, an important figure of the Bellunese world in his time, originally from Belluno. He was responsible for adding the logs of the ancient village of Belluno to the museum’s collection. The museum is currently home to works by Simone da Cusighe, Matteo Cesa, Jacopo Palma il Giovane, Sebastiano and Marco Ricci, Ippollito Caffi and other painters. There are sculptures by Andrea Brustolon and Valentino Panciera Besarel, bronze plaques of Valerio Belli, Cristoforo Caradosso, Moderno, Andrea Riccio and many other works.

The new Civic Museum of Belluno will be located (end of 2016) in entirely renovated spaces, after the conservation and restoration, financed by the Fondazione Cariverona, of the Fulcis Palace complex, that will host exhibition area of around 3000 square meters on five floors. The museum will present itself as the only one in Veneto: the citizen collection displayed in one of the most beautiful 16th century urban buildings of the region, where the dimension of the Palace, with decor including frescos and stuccos, becomes a primary element of attraction, alongside the works of the museum and its historical-artistic collection.

The city of Belluno, in collaboration with the Officine della Cultura, for the fourth consecutive year, is launching “Ferragosto e dintorni”, a festival for the rediscovery and appreciation of the historical-artistic-environmental heritage of the city through the organization of a series of events that will enliven cultural places and urban spaces from August 12th to 23rd.

The calendar, rich with proposals, includes concerts, performance of theater, music and dance, and guided tours focused on the city and its monuments. This year, with the opening of the new museum at the 16th century Fulcis Palace, the festival includes an entire day dedicated to the old and the new museum that will culminate in an enchanting concert in the cloister of the new palace, open in preview, to celebrate the occasion. Special bright moments will be dedicated to families, children and adults with a “technological” treasure hunt thanks to the app Izi.Travel. The Bellunese who stay in the city during the Ferragosto period can rediscover little known corners of the historical center that are not always accessible. Tourists and visitors will have the opportunity to get to know and appreciate the spatial, humanistic and cultural resources offered by our city.

Leggere le sere, the festival of theater, readings, music and dance in Belluno

From July 5th to 26th, the “encounters without the curtain” return to the courtyards of the city with four events each Tuesday in some of the most captivating places of our city to spend pleasant evenings among theater, readings, music and dance. The Associazione Culturale Bretelle Lasche announces the 2016 edition of the “Leggere le sere” Festival.

Here are the details of the program for the 2016 edition of Leggerelesere – incontri senza sipario nei cortili della città (Read the evenings – encounters without the curtain in the courtyards of the city) – from July 5th to 26th 2016 in Belluno, at 9:00pm. Single entrance is 3 euros. In case of bad weather, the event will take place at the Centro Giovanni XXIII.

The festival begins on July 5th, at 9:00pm, in the garden of Villa Miari, on Via Cipro, with the show “La Cura” written by and featuring Barbara Eforo, prose actress renowned by TV audiences for the show “L’albero azzurro”. The text is dedicated to the role of the caregiver who tells the story of the lives lived and known from the people she assists, until her life blends with theirs.

On July 12th, in the garden of the Villa Doglioni Dalmas on Via del Piave, the theatrical dance performance begins with the company “Il teatro Pachuco” in “Coup de Foudre”, featuring Lisa Da Boit and Rudi Galindo. Through the dance performance they share with the audience a sort of silent film that recounts love at first sight, in other words, that which in Italian is called “colpo di fulmine,” or bolt of lightning. Following, the “Korarte” Company with Laura Zago and Giorgio Tollot in “File Life,” which narrates, through dance, a fragile love lived in the past, in the present and perhaps in the future desire.

In the Garden of the Gabelli Schools, on Via Cavour, on July 19th, Chiara Becchimanzi will star, with the voice of Beatrice Burgo, of “Principesse e Sfumature”, a performance both funny and risqué, thus likely more suitable for an adult audience, written and directed by this Roman actress of the Valdrada Company, who, for years, has collaborated with le Bretelle Lasche.

The final event, on July 26th, in the Cloister of the Istituto “Catullo”, on Via Loreto with a new performance by the Bretelle Lasche “All’ombra del lupo” (In the Shadow of the Wolf): the well-known fable of Sergej Prokof’ev will be interpreted by the performance of shadow, as conceived by Nicola Pauletti, with the music of Gabriele Soppelsa and the original drawings of Agnese Meroni, with the company of a dozen or so actors from the “Bretelle”.

Admission for each show is €3.00.

CLOROFILLA is a meeting of artists, muralists and those who work primarily in communicating and building public spaces.

CLOROFILLA began in 2015 as the idea of Ericailcane in collaboration with the Casa dei Beni Comuni, an open citizen laboratory, that works in the region for the common good and to build social spaces for sharing.
Last year, for two weeks in June and July, some of the walls of the Casa dei Beni Comuni (formerly Piave Barracks) and the city of Belluno, were painted for storytelling, an idea of public art created by the people, for the people.
In the north of Italy, close to the geographic borders of the country, Belluno is a splendid oasis in the desert of the mountains. The Dolomites, the heritage of humanity, make the frame for this initiative that brings together artists and citizens.

Col di Roanza and the Chapel of San Michele

Whoever has spent a period of his or her life in Belluno knows it well: one of the best panoramas of the Bellunese Valley is in the village of Col di Roanza, and if you can get there after a beautiful stroll through the town of Sopracroda, even better. But this place does not just give us this splendid view…

Col di Roanza is one of the most desired destinations of the Bellunese: home to many parties, theater for many foot races, a place for restoration thanks to its eponymous sanctuary and above all, the point of departure for reaching the peak of Mount Serva. The place, to be precise, rises from the slopes of this mountain: from here the panorama is decidedly enchanting, both towards the city of Belluno and in the direction of the group of the Schiara.

Going on from Col di Roanza the street becomes an even more challenging path until the peak of Mount Serva; But before arriving to Col di Roanza, what can we find?

After several hairpin turns from Sopracroda, on the right there is a gun emplacement, from which, still on the right, begins a with path that brings you to a basin that is certainly farmed. Here, on the slopes of the hill almost hanging on a hill above the Belluna Valley, rises the sixteenth-century Chapel of San Michele.

Chiesa San Michele

The chapel has basic linear features.
Its structure, as we see it now, is assumed to be that of the sixteenth century, with its characteristic portico for the shelter of travelers that leads to a simple square hall and the octagonal apse.
The early church was probably typical of a late ancient period, during the sixth century, along a path most likely built for military purposes in the Roman era, (if not before), still visible on the ground uphill from the chapel: a Piedmontese route from the bridge of the Alps, passing by way of San liberale crossing Col di Roanza, Vaus and the Pont of the Mortìs, reaching Bolzano Bellunese and then the entrance to the Cordevole Valley without needing to go down all the way to Belluno.

Inside the chapel, under the triumphant arcade, distinguished by two elegant lesenes crowned by capitals carved with vegetable and spiral motifs, one finds a wooden crucifix dating back to the 700s: made by a local artisan.

The altar has a small shovel painted in oil that illustrates a Jewish priest, probably Aronne, who holds up an incense burner and holder; his picture is surrounded by rose branches. This last decoration is probably a nineteeth-century revision, while the picture of the priest seems to be eighteenth century and attributable to the styles of Antonio Gabrielli.

Until just recently the Chapel of San Michele conserved a canvas with an illustration of the virgin and her holy child, with San Michele on the left and a martyr saint on the right. At their shoulders, a landscape of cold colors but with profiles well outlined, of evocative brightness, almost lunar. The piece, of particular value, for precautionary reasons, has been transferred to the Seminary of Belluno. In its place we can find a photographic reproduction.

Here is how to arrive by foot on the long street that leads to Col di Roanza:

The Long Night of the Churches

The Long Night of the Churches

Bellunolanote, in collaboration with Pastorale Giovanile di Belluno-Feltre, is organizing the first edition of “The Long Night of the Churches”, the first sleepless night to take place inside houses of worship of the city!

Bellunolanotte, the civic association led by Stefano Casagrande, always very active and innovative, presents a new type of event: the “Long Night of the Churches,” which brings together culture, art, music and theater in a key of reflection and spirituality. All of which will happen inside the churches of our city! The event is in collaboration with the Pastorale Giovanile Belluno-Feltre and Don Luciano Todesco, who embraced this project.

Friday, June 10th Loreto, Santo Stefano, San Pietro and San Rocco will host events tied to music, theater, chanting, alternating with moments of meditation.

There will even be access to places and rooms usually closed to the public, such as the splendid cloisters, by way of guided tours organized for the event, all in one day.

The map of the churches:

Stefano Casagrande, president of BellunoLaNotte commented on the event:

“It will be a true and real sleepless night! The idea is inspired by the “Lange Nacht Kirche” that has been taking place in Austria for 10 years in nearly 700 churches simultaneously, with the objective of involving the church in the social life of the city, to give a sign of modernity and presence in the community. The hope is that here in Belluno it can be an event that will grow for years to come. For the audience we expect to have not only families and children, but also many young people interested in art and culture, who, moreover, will be actively captivated for the entire day; and perhaps even some tourists will arrive! We are hoping to involve the many civic associations that have been active in culture for years and can thus, hopefully, help with promotion. We have already received sponsorship from the City and Province of Belluno, as well as the Region of Veneto, that realized the importance of the event.”

The program is ready and will be detailed in the coming days. But the first names confirmed are all of renowned and important professionals, leaders in their fields: Anna Olivier, who will also be the Artistic Director of the entire event, in a religious theatrical performance together with Giulia Corradi. And then the singer-songwriter Giorgio Fornasier, Maria Grazia Feltre and Stefano Emmi with a religious opera, a musician duet: Chiara Gasparotto on the harp and Angelo Martin on the oboe, the Scuola Miari with Mirko Ballico in an organ concert, Paolo Fornasier in a concert for pianoforte and finally we can’t leave out the electronic music, like with GizA DJs. There will also be the Coro Minimo, Voci dai Cortivi and the Bellunese Choral Group. Many more performers will be announced in the coming days.

At the same time, the official Facebook page launched: Lunga Notte delle Chiese, where you can find all of the updated information and news that will follow in the next few days. It will be possible to download the program.

Villa Montalban, at the foot of Mount Serva

A villa that tells the story of heroic knights, moments of true magnificence of the story of Belluno, the very difficult period of Austrian-German invasion and that today hosts cultural and sport events.

All of the Bellunesi know where Villa Montalban is, a bit because it is one of the architectural treasures of Belluno, but also because it is often the theater for big parties that bring together many people, as well as cultural activities and sports events.

Today we want to tell you the history of this isolated villa that sits on a flat terrain and behind which, like a boundless and dark scenery, rises the steep and wooded southern face of Mount Serva.

We do not know the exact date of the construction of the villa, nor who was the architect of the project. Over the years various theories have been created to answer this question, nevertheless the opinion most shared is that it was built in the first half of the 1600s.

However what is certain is that the compound was commissioned by the famous Fulcis family, one of the richest and most powerful of Belluno, who over centuries built various buildings in the historical center of Belluno and other villas in the countryside.  Do you know why the Fulcis family was so rich? Thanks to military activity. Many members of this family, in fact, were Jerusalem knights active in the wars against the Turks, which could guarantee the Fulcis family would have had numerous and influential friendships even outside of the Bellunese region.

Of the Fulcis family we said: but then why is it called Villa Montalban? We will explain right away. After the death of the last descendant of the Fulcis family, Fulcio Fulcis, which actually happened at the villa, the property of the estate was passed to the grandson Damiano Miari, prior to the use of the double surname Miari-Fulcis; a few years later however, by way of marriage, he was succeeded by the Montalban counts. The mystery is solved! Even if it is to say that the full name of the villa would be Fulcis-Montalban, however it is known to all by only its second name.

But let’s get back to the features of the villa. You must know that at the height of its splendor this Bellunese pearl controlled a vast agricultural property: take note that the land extended from the village of Sargnano until Andreane, and from the slopes of the Serva to as far as the Piave river. Today the property of the villa is notably reduced and includes “only” 7 hectares; furthermore the land surrounding the villa no longer conserves the original statues and fountains.

Really, because the land in front of the villa was certainly not as we see it today. Try to imagine how it must have been arriving in front of a carriage in the golden age: before the eyes of the visitor is revealed a long street with gates, picturesquely lined up with the southern edge of the villa, that open to a suggestive path that ends in the courtyard, turning around the fountain and then going down in front of the portico of the entrance. It is not by chance that Villa Montalban is considered “perhaps the best example of typical monuments built in the Bellunese valley” (Alpago Novello), and this is for two reasons: to demonstrate the wealth of the family, but also to celebrate their military victories.

The structure, externally simple and linear, on the inside once guarded precious decorations that today are mostly lost.

On the facade of the villa are two large painted crests that show the broad-winged eagle of the Fulcis with the star of the Knights of Malta, the claws at an enemy. All around military trophies, canons and flags. Below each of these crests is a sundial.

Villa Montalban during World War I, however, and in particular during the Austro-German invasion of 1917-1918, was seriously damaged and thus abandoned, becoming subject to vandalism until the 1930s.

Later on the villa was acquired by the Pontifica Opera di Assistenza that transformed it for community use; in 1958 there was significant restoration work and finally in 1976 the entire estate was acquired by the City of Belluno. In recent years it has been home to a professional school, sports clubs and cultural events.

A quirk: the villa hosted the marshal Massena in 1799, the viceroy Eugenio Napoleon in 1809, Victor Emmanuel III and Elena of Savoy in 1903.

Villa Miari Fulcis, a Pearl of Belluno

Today we bring you to Modolo, near Belluno, to visit Villa Miari Fulcis. Are you ready for the trip? Great, join us…

We begin talking about the place where we find ourselves: Modolo, a lush small town of Castion renowned for the large villa of Milari to the north, and by homes dispersed to the east. It is an area visited often by those who wish to do a short hike immersed in nature.

The villa that we are talking about today is one of the most ample and complex villas of the 1600s in the Belluno area and is part of the list of 100 Venetian villas of A. Canova. It is not easy to describe its beauty and features, as it is an impressive estate that at every turn offers new perspectives and shapes. Nonetheless we will try all the same, and to do so, we begin by using the words of A. Alpago-Novello, who described Villa Milari Fulcis as such:

“The villa reveals a deep fusion of the fluidity of the planning, the variety and the composition of the areas, which create perspectives and well-defined spaces, and architectural perfection, together with a precise setting in the surrounding nature.”

The construction of the villa of Modolo began in around 1644 as a home for one of the branches of the noble Miari family, who was constantly increasing its prestige and riches in the region of Castion.

Alpago-Novello tells us that in the 18th century the villa had about the same dimensions as it does now, and that in addition to the main building it included the long wings of the stables and the elegant entry gate. The entrance, in fact, is one of the most notable parts of this important estate: it is one of the most representative examples of the Baroque style, explains the Feltrino city planner and historian. Yet, he explains, these very whimsical and sculptural works were uncommon in the valley.

And it is this detail in particular that leads intellectuals to believe that an artist not from the Belluno region, likely a sculpture or a painter, less likely an architect, intervened. The remainder of the villa, and specifically the rustic wing, are of a more traditional style, even if the result is very unbalanced.

The villa as we see it today is the result of the work of Andrea Miari around 1806: he lived in this splendid home (as its owner) and in when an architect decided to put, as they say, his hand. This was how the main structure was transformed, acquiring its unusually arranged floor plan and becomes decorated by Ionic and Corinthian semi-columns, expanding in a wing that abuts another building of a lower height: the Barchessa.   On the ample external staircase you can see the Casa Miari coat of arms, dated 1806 and the name of the stonemason Giovanni Maria De Vetori. The garden that extends in front of the Villa has a real well from the end of the 1600s, adorned by a group of crests.

A curiosity: between the small square windows of the upper level there are seven painted sundials that indicate the time corresponding with the main cities of Europe. These sundials were painted in the 19th century by Count Francesco Miari Fulcis who was a Professor of Geodesy at the University of Padova.
